BIS certification for tables and desks is a conformity assessment issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) confirming that furniture products comply with IS 17633:2022 – Tables and Desks.
This certification authorizes the manufacturer or importer to use the ISI mark, which indicates that the product meets Indian standards for quality, safety, durability, and performance. Without BIS certification, tables and desks cannot be legally sold in India.
EVTL INDIA provides complete end-to-end support for BIS certification under Scheme
I, covering documentation, testing coordination, factory inspection preparation, and

Yes. BIS certification for tables and desks is mandatory as per the Furniture (Quality Control) Order. The regulation applies to:
From the notified implementation date, only BIS certified tables and desks bearing the ISI mark will be permitted for sale in India. EVTL INDIA strongly recommends early compliance to avoid supply chain disruption, penalties, or product recalls.
The Indian Standard IS 17633: 2022 specifies requirements for desks and tables, taking into account factors like construction quality, performance metrics, and material quality. This standard establishes criteria of the design, stability, load-bearing capacity and ergonomic factors of a table and desk to make it fit in different applications.
The information in IS 17633:2022 offers the guideline to the testing methods that determine the
integrity and performance of the furniture and ensure the standards of safety and functionality
are high. Compliance to this standard makes sure that tables and desks are made to be reliable
and comfortable and satisfy the needs of various users.
Several tests are essential for examining the general purpose chairs and stool's safety, robustness, and quality in order to obtain BIS certification by IS 17632:2022:
● Design and Workmanship: It evaluates the overall aesthetics and construction quality to
ascertain whether it satisfies both practical and aesthetic standards.
● Measurements: This ensures that the chairs and stools are a comfortable size.
● Stability Test: The purpose of the stability test is to make sure the product won't topple over under
normal operating conditions.
● Static Load/Strength
Test:
The test determines the capacity of the chair to support weight
without damage and deformation.
● Impact/Strength Test: This replicates abrupt impacts in order to determine the ability of
the chair to last long.
● Durability Test: Tests the stability of the materials and structure of the chair when it is
used over a long period of time.
● Surface Finish Test: Inspects the surface finish of quality and safety to avoid such faces
like splinters or rough edges.
● Resistance to Wear and
Tear:
Assesses how well the materials hold up against everyday wear and friction.
In order to be certified as BIS, manufacturers are required to present the following documents:
● Application form
● Details of Manufacturing process
● Quality control plan
● Laboratory tests of BIS-approved laboratories
● Equipment and layout of factories
● Certification of registration of business
● Product characteristics and technical details
● Statement of Indian standards compliance.
Also, the manufacturers might be requested to submit evidence of adherence to the environmental and safety regulations, again depending on the type of product in question, that is, certified.
