The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has officially extended the implementation timeline for the revised IS 18112:2025 standard, titled “Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission – Specification.” This standard defines the essential requirements for Digital Television (DTV) receivers designed to receive Free-to-Air (FTA) satellite TV and radio signals, ensuring consistent quality and performance across devices in the Indian market.
Under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021, issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), products like Plasma, LCD, and LED televisions already fall under mandatory BIS certification based on IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014 for safety compliance.
In April 2023, MeitY expanded this Order to include Digital Television Receivers for Satellite Broadcast Transmission, with an initial implementation date of April 26, 2025.
This date was later extended to October 26, 2025, and now—according to the latest BIS notification dated 22 September 2025—the final implementation deadline has been further extended to January 26, 2026.
Last date for concurrent use of IS 18112:2022 and IS 18112:2025 – 30 December 2025
Final implementation date for IS 18112:2025 – 26 January 2026
All television sets must comply with:
IS 18112:2025 – Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission
IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014 – Safety requirements for TV sets
Licence holders must apply for inclusion of IS 18112:2025 under their existing BIS licence, along with complete test reports.
Any model not conforming to IS 18112:2025 by January 26, 2026, may be removed from licence scope or face cancellation.
Manufacturers are encouraged to align early with IS 18112:2025 to ensure a seamless transition and avoid re-certification delays later.
New applications for Plasma, LCD, or LED TVs must now comply with both IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014 and IS 18112:2025.
From January 26, 2026, BIS licences will no longer be issued based solely on IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014.
Updated definitions from IS 1885 (Part 24):2023.
Incorporation of IS/IEC 62368-1 for enhanced safety, aligning with international standards.
Elimination of redundant power consumption requirements, now governed by BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency).
Added specifications for mute/unmute functionality in remote controls.
Editorial corrections and improved compliance guidance for better clarity.
Television sets conforming to both IS 616 and IS 18112 must display both standard numbers along with a single BIS licence number, as shown below:
IS 616 / IEC 60065
IS 18112

The extended timeline offers manufacturers additional preparation time to adapt their testing and production processes in line with IS 18112:2025.
This move ensures a smooth transition while maintaining product safety, reliability, and technological consistency across the Indian digital television market.
With the revision of IS 18112:2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards continues to strengthen India’s regulatory framework for digital electronics.
The updated standard ensures that Digital Television Receivers meet modern safety and performance benchmarks, supporting India’s commitment to quality broadcasting and consumer protection.
Manufacturers are strongly advised to begin compliance preparations immediately to meet the January 26, 2026 deadline without disruption.
