This is the Indian Standard that specifies the quality and performance requirements for single-phase AC motors. It is issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure these motors are:

• Designed for safe and stable operation under normal working conditions
• Capable of delivering consistent and efficient performance
• Suitable for continuous use in industrial and general-purpose applications
• Built with proper electrical protection to avoid faults and failures

• R (Required): Test must be conducted in the manufacturer’s in-house laboratory.
• S (Subcontracting Allowed): Test can be conducted in a BIS-approved or NABL-accredited laboratory.

• Insulation Resistance Test (R) – Ensures proper insulation between windings and body to prevent leakage or shock risk
• High Voltage Test (R) – Verifies that the motor can safely withstand high voltage without breakdown
• Earthing Test (R) – Ensures proper grounding for electrical safety
• Terminal Marking Check (R) – Confirms correct identification of terminals for safe connection.

• No-load Current, Power Input & Speed Test (R)—Checks motor performance at rated voltage without load
• Full Load Performance Test (S) – Evaluates efficiency, power factor, and slip under load conditions
• Torque Tests (S)—Includes pull-up torque, pull-out torque, and breakaway torque checks for proper starting and running capability
• Reduced Voltage Running Test (S)—Ensures smooth starting performance under low voltage conditions
• Switching Operation Test (R)—Verifies correct operation of centrifugal switch (if applicable)

• Momentary Overload Test (S) – Checks motor ability to handle temporary overload conditions
• Moisture-Proofness Test (S)—Ensures safe operation under humid or damp conditions
• Leakage Current Test (S) – Confirms current leakage remains within safe limits
• Vibration Test (S) – Ensures stable operation without excessive vibration
• Over-speed Test (S)—Verifies motor safety at higher-than-rated speeds

• Winding Resistance Test (R) – Checks uniform resistance in motor windings
• Dimension Check (R) – Ensures correct size and mechanical compliance
• Noise Level Test (S) – Ensures motor operates within permissible noise limits
• Visual Inspection (R) – Confirms proper build quality and finishing
• Direction of Rotation Test (R) – Ensures correct motor rotation direction

1. Online Registration: Manufacturers register on the BIS Manak portal by submitting company, factory, and product details. Foreign manufacturers must appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR).
2. Testing at BIS: Approved Laboratory: Product samples are tested in BIS-approved labs to check safety, insulation, heating performance, and electrical protection.
3. Application Submission: The application is submitted along with test reports, technical documents, and factory details. Foreign manufacturers must also submit AIR-related documents.
4. Factory Inspection: BIS officials inspect the manufacturing unit to verify the production process, safety measures, and quality control system.
5. Grant of BIS License: If all requirements are met, BIS grants the certification license under Scheme-I.
6. Use of ISI Mark: After approval, the manufacturer can use the ISI mark on products with a CM/L number, confirming that the product meets BIS standards.
