Diesel generators (DG sets) are
indispensable in various sectors, providing reliable backup power during
outages and serving as primary power sources in remote locations. Given their
critical role, ensuring their safety, quality, and conformity to standards is
paramount. Recognizing this, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has
introduced Scheme X Certification, a
regulatory framework aimed at standardizing machinery and electrical equipment,
including diesel generators, in India.
Launched on 16th March 2022, Scheme X
Certification is part of the BIS Conformity Assessment Regulations, 2018. This
scheme ensures that machinery and electrical equipment meet stringent Indian
standards for safety and quality. The Ministry
of Heavy Industries, through the Omnibus
Technical Regulation Order, 2024, has mandated that all manufacturers—domestic
and foreign—comply with Indian standard requirements under Scheme X
Certification by 28th August 2025.
The BIS Scheme X Certification
encompasses:
This includes parts such as diesel
engines, alternators, control panels, fuel systems, exhaust systems, and more.
Certified diesel generators adhere to
Indian safety standards, reducing risks associated with electrical hazards,
fire, and mechanical failures.
BIS certification ensures that diesel
generators and their components meet performance benchmarks, leading to reliable
and efficient operation.
Post 28th August 2025, only BIS-certified diesel generators and
components can be manufactured, sold, or imported in India. Non-compliance may
lead to legal repercussions, including fines and product recalls.
The BIS mark signifies adherence to
quality and safety standards, enhancing consumer confidence in the product.
Identify whether your diesel generator
or its components fall under the mandatory BIS certification scheme.
Prepare necessary documents,
including:
Submit an application on the BIS
portal under the relevant scheme, uploading all required documents and paying
the prescribed fees.
Send samples to BIS-recognized
laboratories for testing against applicable Indian Standards.
BIS officials conduct an on-site
inspection to verify manufacturing practices and quality control systems.
Upon successful evaluation, BIS grants
the certification, allowing the manufacturer to use the BIS Standard Mark.
Regular audits and product testing
ensure ongoing compliance. Certifications are typically valid for a specific
period and require renewal.
The BIS Scheme X Certification is a pivotal regulatory move aimed at
standardizing and safeguarding the quality and safety of diesel generators and
their components in India. Manufacturers must proactively align their products
and processes with Scheme X guidelines to ensure compliance, gain market
access, and enhance consumer trust.
