Important update regarding Indian Standard applicable to all existing Licence holders/ New applicants/ manufacturers/ importers/ product sellers for Water Meters (bulk-type)

BIS Quality Control Order for Water meters and accessories Water Meters (bulk-type)

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry after consulting with the Bureau of Indian Standards has issued Water Meters and Accessories (Quality Control) Order, 2023. This QCO mandates the manufacturers and suppliers of bulk-type water meters must ensure that their products comply with the quality standards by the specified by BIS.

These water meters must have the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as per the Indian Standard IS 2373:1981, according to Scheme-1 of Schedule-II to the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. This order does not apply to goods made for export.

It will come into effect six months after it is published in the Official Gazette. For small enterprises, the order will come into effect nine months after publication. For micro enterprises, the order will come into effect twelve months after publication.

The Bureau of Indian Standards will be responsible for certifying and enforcing these standards. Anyone who does not follow this order will face penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

This quality control order is to ensure that water meters are reliable and meet high-quality standards, benefiting the public and maintaining trust in water measurement.
