Here is an important update for all existing license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers regarding the Steel and Steel Products (Steel wire for mechanical springs Part 2: Oil hardened and tempered steel wire) (Quality Control) Order, 2024.

BIS QCO for the Steel and Steel Products (Steel wire for mechanical springs Part 2: Oil hardened and tempered steel wire)

The Ministry of Steel has issued this new Quality Control Order (QCO) under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016.

This order replaces the earlier 2020 QCO and has been effective from 5th February 2024, the date it was published in the Official Gazette. Any work already started under the old order will remain valid.

This notification applies specifically to Steel wire for mechanical springs Part 2: Oil hardened and tempered steel wire, which must now follow the Indian Standard IS 4454 (Part 2): 2001.

From the date of implementation, every product under this category must:

  • Carry the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid BIS license as per Scheme–I of Schedule–II of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018
  • Be supplied with a Test Certificate issued by a BIS-certified manufacturer

Products made only for export are exempted from this requirement, as long as they meet the specifications required by foreign buyers.
