Here’s an important update for all existing BIS licence holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers regarding the Steel and Steel Products (Specification for Steel for the manufacture of Volute, Helical, and Laminated Springs for Automotive Suspension) (Quality Control) Order, 2024.

BIS QCO for the Steel and Steel Products (Specification for Steel for the manufacture of Volute, Helical, and Laminated Springs for Automotive Suspension)

The Ministry of Steel has officially issued the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024 under the powers granted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016.
This new order replaces the earlier 2020 QCO and has come into effect from 5th February 2024, the date it was published in the Official Gazette. Any work initiated under the previous order will remain valid.

Key Provisions

This Order applies to Steel and Steel Products specifically used in the manufacture of volute, helical, and laminated springs for automotive suspension.
All such products must now comply with the Indian Standard IS 3431:1982.

From the implementation date, every product covered under this category must:

Bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid BIS license, granted as per Scheme–I of Schedule–II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018
Be accompanied by a Test Certificate issued by a BIS-certified manufacturer

Export Exemption

Products manufactured solely for export are exempted from this requirement, provided they meet the foreign buyer’s specifications.

Compliance and Enforcement

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been designated as the certifying and enforcing authority for this Order.
Failure to comply with any provision of this Order may lead to penalties under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016.

Any future amendment or revision made by BIS to the specified Indian Standard will automatically apply to this Order from the date of its publication.
