Here’s an important update regarding the Indian Standards applicable to all existing licence holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and sellers under the Solar Thermal Systems, Devices and Components (Quality Control) Order, 2024.
Overview – BIS QCO for Solar Thermal Systems (Storage Water Tank for ETC Systems)
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has introduced the Solar Thermal Systems, Devices and Components (Quality Control) Order, 2024 to regulate product quality and ensure safety standards in the solar sector.
This order will come into effect after 180 days from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette. It applies to All Glass Evacuated Tubes Solar Collectors and related components manufactured, imported, or sold in India. However, products meant exclusively for export are exempt from this requirement.
As per the order, Direct Insertion Type Storage Water Tanks used in All Glass Evacuated Tubes Solar Water Heating Systems must comply with Indian Standard IS 16542:2016.
Additionally, these products must carry the ISI Mark, which can only be obtained by securing a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards under the applicable conformity assessment scheme.

Implementation & Compliance

- Effective Date: 6th April, 2025
The Bureau of Indian Standards, in coordination with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, will also conduct market surveillance activities to ensure that products in the market comply with the prescribed Indian Standard and carry the Standard Mark.
Important Note
Non-compliance with this order may lead to penalties under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. Therefore, all stakeholders are strongly advised to ensure timely compliance to avoid any legal or business disruptions.
