Important update for all existing license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers regarding the Steel and Steel Products (Steel for Hardening and Tempering – Specification) (Quality Control) Order, 2024.

BIS QCO for Steel and Steel Products (Steel for Hardening and Tempering – Specification)

The Ministry of Steel has issued the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024 under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016. This new Order replaces the earlier 2020 QCO and became effective from 5th February 2024, the date it was published in the Official Gazette. Any work already started under the previous Order will remain valid.

This notification applies to Steel for Hardening and Tempering. From the implementation date, every product under this category must:

  • Follow the Indian Standard IS 5517:1993

  • Carry the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid BIS license as per Scheme–I of Schedule–II of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018

  • Be supplied with a Test Certificate issued by a BIS-certified manufacturer

Products manufactured only for export purposes are exempted, as long as they meet the specifications required by foreign buyers.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the certifying and enforcing authority for this Order. Non-compliance will attract penalties under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016.

Any future revision or amendment made by BIS to this Indian Standard will automatically apply to this Order from the date of publication.
