Dear Reader, An important update has been issued regarding the Indian Standard applicable to all existing license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers dealing in Primary Lead under the Primary Lead (Quality Control) Order, 2025.

Overview of the BIS QCO for Primary Lead – IS 27:2023

The Ministry of Mines, Government of India, has notified the Primary Lead (Quality Control) Order, 2025, under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016. This Order ensures that all Primary Lead produced, sold, imported, or distributed in India complies with Indian Standard IS 27:2023.

From the effective date, Primary Lead must:

  • Conform to IS 27:2023 specifications.
  • Bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid BIS license granted as per Scheme–I of Schedule–II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
  • Be certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) — the designated authority for certification and enforcement.

Goods manufactured exclusively for export are exempt from this Order, provided they meet the technical requirements of the importing country.

Important Notes:

  • Any violation or non-compliance with this Order is a punishable offence under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will act as the implementation and enforcement authority for this Quality Control Order.
