This is an important update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to all existing Licence holders/ New applicants/ manufacturers/ importers/ product sellers of Primary aluminium ingots for remelting for general engineering purpose.

On August 31, 2023, the Ministry of Mines issued the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order, 2023. Initially, the implementation date was set for three months from the date of its publication. However, the ministry issued an amendment on May 3, 2024, titled the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024, which extended the implementation date to December 1, 2024.

Officially titled the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order, 2023, the regulation governs the quality of specific aluminium products.
- The original implementation date was set as three months from the publication of the notification.
- The amended implementation date is now set for December 1, 2024, providing additional time for compliance.
- Mandatory BIS Certification
The regulation mandates that Primary aluminium ingots for remelting for general engineering purpose must conform to Indian Standard IS 2590 : 1987.
- Manufacturers are required to obtain a BIS license to affix the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) on their products.
- This requirement does not apply to goods manufactured solely for export purposes.
- Certifying and Enforcement Authority
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is designated as the certifying and enforcement authority for this regulation. BIS will ensure that only products meeting the prescribed standards are manufactured, imported, or sold domestically.
- Scope of Application
This order applies exclusively to Primary aluminium ingots for remelting for general engineering purpose used within India. Products manufactured for export are explicitly excluded from this mandate.
By extending the timeline, the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024 provides manufacturers additional time to align their processes with the prescribed standards.
