BIS QCO for Hot Rolled Medium and High Tensile Structural Steel IS 2062:2011

The Ministry of Steel has notified the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024 under the provisions of Sections 16, 17, and sub-section (3) of Section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016). This Order supersedes the earlier Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2020 and comes into force from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, while actions taken under the previous Order remain unaffected.

The notification specifically covers Hot Rolled Medium and High Tensile Structural Steel, with the exception of bars and rods of diameter or thickness less than 6 mm and structural below 50 mm × 50 mm × 6 mm. All such products manufactured for the domestic market must conform to Indian Standard IS 2062:2011. Compliance requires that products carry the Standard Mark (ISI Mark), granted only under a valid license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in accordance with Scheme–I of Schedule–II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Each consignment must also be supported with a Test Certificate issued by a BIS-certified manufacturer.

The Order, however, provides exemption for steel and steel products manufactured in India exclusively for export, where foreign buyers specify alternative standards. The Bureau of Indian Standards has been designated as the authority responsible for certification and enforcement. Any violation of the provisions of this Order is punishable under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016.

Further, any amendments or revisions to the specified Indian Standard, once published by BIS, will automatically become applicable under this Quality Control Order.
