BIS QCO for High Strength Deformed Steel Bars and Wires for Concrete Reinforcement IS 1786:2008
The Ministry of Steel has notified the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024 under the provisions of Sections 16, 17, and sub-section (3) of Section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016). This Order replaces the earlier Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2020 and comes into force from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, without affecting actions already undertaken under the previous Order.
The notification makes it mandatory for High Strength Deformed Steel Bars and Wires for Concrete Reinforcement—with the exception of bars and wires below 8 mm in size—to conform to Indian Standard IS 1786:2008. All such products must carry the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), granted in accordance with Scheme–I of Schedule–II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Each consignment must also be accompanied by a Test Certificate issued by a BIS-certified manufacturer.
The requirement does not apply to domestically manufactured steel and steel products that are produced specifically for export in line with foreign buyer specifications. The Bureau of Indian Standards has been designated as the implementing authority to certify, regulate, and enforce compliance with this Order. Any violation will attract penalties as laid down under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016.
In addition, any amendments or revisions to the Indian Standard notified by BIS will automatically become applicable to this Order from the date of their publication.
