This is an important update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to all existing license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers for Furniture (Tables and Desks) under the Furniture (Tables and Desks) (Quality Control) Order, 2025.

Overview of the BIS QCO for Furniture (Tables and Desks)

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has officially issued the Furniture (Tables and Desks) (Quality Control) Order, 2025 under the authority of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

As per this Order, all tables and desks manufactured, imported, or sold in India must conform to Indian Standard IS 17633:2022 and bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark).
To use this mark, manufacturers are required to obtain a BIS License under Scheme–I of Schedule–II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Exemptions from this Order

Certain exemptions have been granted under this QCO:

  1. Products Meant for Export:
    Furniture manufactured solely for export purposes is exempt from this order.

  2. Micro and Small Enterprises:
    Micro and Small Enterprises, as defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, are exempted for 18 months from the date of publication of this Order.

  3. Very Small Units (Registered on Udyam Portal):
    Enterprises registered under the Udyam Portal of the Ministry of MSME, with

    • investment in plant and machinery or equipment not exceeding ₹25 lakh, and

    • annual turnover not exceeding ₹2 crore,
      as certified by a Chartered Accountant, are also exempted from this order.

Important Compliance Note

Any individual, manufacturer, importer, or entity found violating this Order will face penalties under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will be the implementing and enforcement authority for this Quality Control Order.
