This is an important update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to all existing Licence holders/ New applicants/ manufacturers/ importers/ product sellers of Cast aluminium and its alloys – Ingots and castings for general engineering purposes.
On August 31, 2023, theMinistry of Minesissued theAluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order, 2023. Initially, the implementation date was set for three months from the date of its publication. However, the ministry issued an amendment on May 3, 2024, titled theAluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024, which extended the implementation date toDecember 1, 2024.

- Title and Implementation Timeline
Officially titled theAluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order, 2023, the regulation governs the quality of specific aluminium products.
- The original implementation date was set as three months from the publication of the notification.
- Theamended implementation dateis now set forDecember 1, 2024, providing additional time for compliance.
- Mandatory BIS Certification
The regulation mandates thatCast aluminium and its alloys – Ingots and castings for general engineering purposesmust conform toIndian Standard IS 617:1994.
- Manufacturers are required to obtain aBIS licenseto affix theStandard Mark (ISI Mark)on their products.
- This requirement doesnot apply to goods manufactured solely for export purposes.
- Certifying and Enforcement Authority
TheBureau of Indian Standards (BIS)is designated as the certifying and enforcement authority for this regulation. BIS will ensure that only products meeting the prescribed standards are manufactured, imported, or sold domestically.
- Scope of Application
This order applies exclusively toCast aluminium and its alloys – Ingots and castings for general engineering purposesused within India. Products manufactured for export are explicitly excluded from this mandate.
By extending the timeline, theAluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024provides manufacturers additional time to align their processes with the prescribed standards. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing product quality and safety while supporting industry readiness.
