BIS Certification for Safes IS 550 (Part 1): 2014

BIS Certification for Safes IS 550 (Part 1): 2014

ISI Mark Certification Product Image

Cash, documents, and other valuable items have always been among the prime security needs of homes, banks, and businesses. These safes have been manufactured for restricted entry, fire resistance, and maximum security against theft. Strength of construction, efficient locking system, and shock resistance make these safes ideal security equipment for personal and commercial use.

The safety standard requirements of the products have been prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards as per IS 550 (Part 1): 2022. This certification process requires conducting certain tests which include evaluation of material strength, efficiency of locking systems, fire resistance, and many more. Samples of these products are tested in BIS-approved laboratories to prove their reliability in terms of safety and performance. Manufacturers must obtain the product license to sell the safes in the Indian market.

What is IS 550 (Part 1): 2022?

This is the Indian Standard for safes used for secure storage of cash, valuables, documents, and other important items. It mentions the safety and construction requirements necessary to ensure protection against burglary and unauthorized access. As per the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards), safes are:

  • Checked for structural accuracy
  • Evaluated for locking system performance
  • Assessed for durability
  • Tested for resistance against theft

Eligibility for Safe Cabinet BIS License

BIS authorisation under IS 550 (Part 1): 2022 is required for businesses involved in manufacturing, importing, or supplying burglary-resistant safes in India.

Applicable to:

  • Manufacturers (India) - Must get BIS approval if the product is covered under QCO.
  • Foreign Manufacturers - Need certification to export the safe cabinet to India.
  • Importers/Brand Owners - Must ensure that the products are BIS-certified before sale.
  • Sellers/Distributors - Should only sell certified safe deposit lockers.

Testing and Inspection Requirements

To ensure the durability and security performance of safes, the Bureau of Indian Standards outlines the minimum requirements under IS 550 (Part 1): 2022. This certification ensures that manufacturers meet minimum resistance requirements for secure storage. The BIS testing parameters and quality checks for the safes are listed below:

Test GroupWhat is TestedPurpose
Locking System Test Key locks, mechanical combination locks, electronic locks Ensures security, reliability, and proper functioning of locking mechanisms
Lock Bolt Engagement Test Engagement depth and operation of locking boltsEnsures secure locking and resistance to forced opening
Retrofitting Provision Test Provision for installation of time lock systems Ensures compatibility with advanced security features
Construction and Workmanship Inspection Assembly quality, welding, hinges, door alignment, internal fixtures Ensures proper manufacturing quality and defect-free construction
Weight Verification Test Declared and actual weight of safesEnsures compliance with declared specifications
Design Compliance Test Overall structural design as per IS 550 (Part 1): 2022 Ensures adherence to safety design requirements
Painting and Coating Test Surface coating quality and paint applicationEnsures corrosion resistance and durability of finish

Cross Hatch Adhesion Test

Paint adhesion strength on surface coating Ensures coating does not peel or degrade over time
Burglary Resistance Test Resistance against forced entry and burglary tools Ensures high security against unauthorized access
Fire Endurance Test Resistance against fire exposure conditions Ensures protection of contents during fire incidents
Internal Fixtures Test Internal compartments and fittings stability Ensures usability and secure internal storage design

How to apply for Security Safes BIS License?

The BIS Authorisation process ensures that the vault safes meet the prescribed quality and safety standards for safe storage. This process is set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and includes the following steps:

  1. Online Registration: Manufacturers register on the BIS Manak portal by submitting company, factory, and product details. Foreign manufacturers must appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR).
  2. Testing at BIS-Approved Laboratory: Product samples are tested in BIS-approved laboratories for locking system performance, burglary resistance, dimensional accuracy, coating quality, durability, and overall security performance of the product.
  3. Application Submission: The application is submitted along with test reports, technical documents, and factory details. In the case of foreign manufacturers, submission of Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) documents is also mandatory.
  4. Factory Inspection: BIS officials inspect the manufacturing unit to verify the production process, safety measures, and quality control system.
  5. Grant of BIS License: Upon satisfactory verification of all requirements, BIS grants the certification license under Scheme-I.
  6. Use of ISI Mark: Once approved, the manufacturer can use the ISI Mark on the product along with the CM/L number, indicating full compliance with BIS standards.
