Dear Viewer,

BIS QCO for Tin Ingot
The Ministry of Mines has formally issued the Tin Ingot (Quality Control) Order, 2025, as part of its broader initiative to strengthen quality assurance mechanisms in India’s metal sector. The order was notified on 17th April 2025, introducing mandatory quality standards for tin ingots used in various industrial applications across the country.
What is the Tin Ingot (Quality
Control) Order, 2025?
Tin Ingots are essential in the manufacturing of solders, tinplate, bearings, and a variety of alloys used in electronics, packaging, and automotive industries. Given the importance of consistent purity and performance, the Government of India has now made it compulsory for tin ingots to meet nationally recognized quality specifications.
As per the order, all tin ingots intended for domestic use must conform to Indian Standard IS 26:2024 and must bear the Standard Mark issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This requirement ensures that only high-quality tin enters the Indian market, safeguarding both industrial processes and consumer interests.
Implementation Date
The Tin Ingot (Quality Control)
Order, 2025 shall come into effect six months from the date of publication, making 17th
October 2025 the official implementation date.
Scope of the Order
- This order applies to all tin ingots
supplied for domestic consumption.
- It does not apply to tin ingots that are specifically manufactured for export purposes.
Mandatory Standard Mark
Under this regulation, all tin ingots must meet the technical and chemical composition requirements as specified in IS 26:2024. Manufacturers and importers must obtain a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to affix the Standard Mark on their products.
Licensing will be governed under Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. The presence of the Standard Mark affirms that the tin ingot complies with BIS’s rigorous quality and safety benchmarks.
Enforcement Authority
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will serve as the certifying and enforcing authority for this order. BIS will oversee the licensing process, conduct periodic inspections, and take enforcement actions to ensure full compliance with the prescribed standard.
Non-Compliance and Penalties
Any manufacturer, importer, or supplier found violating the provisions of this order may be penalized under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. Penalties can include license suspension, monetary fines, and legal action depending on the severity and recurrence of non-compliance.
Conclusion
The Tin Ingot (Quality Control)
Order, 2025, reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the
quality and reliability of critical base metals in India. With the mandatory
adoption of IS 26:2024, industries dependent on tin will benefit from increased
consistency, performance, and international competitiveness.
All stakeholders—especially producers, importers, and traders—are advised to initiate the certification process with BIS well ahead of the 17th October 2025 deadline to avoid regulatory disruptions and maintain seamless market access.
