Important update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to all existing Licence holders/ New applicants/ manufacturers/ importers/ product sellers for Lauric Acid.
TheMinistry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, through theDepartment of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, has taken a significant step towards ensuring the quality and safety of industrial chemicals in India. On25th April 2025, the government notified theLauric Acid (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2025, further strengthening the framework originally laid out in theLauric Acid (Quality Control) Order, 2022.
This amendment has been issued under the powers conferred bySection 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016, and comes into effect onOctober 24,2025. The core objective is to enhance consumer safety, promote product quality, and regulate the import, sale, and manufacture ofLauric Acidin the domestic market.
Scope and Applicability
The latest amendment clarifies that:
- The order applies exclusively toLauric Acidas specified in the schedule.
- Products meant solely for exportareexemptedfrom the provisions of this order.
Mandatory BIS Certification
As per the order:
- All Lauric Acid products mustconform to Indian Standard IS 10931:1984.
- These products mustbear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark)under a valid licence granted by theBureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
- The certification must followScheme-I of Schedule-IIof theBIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
Enforcement and Penalty
TheBureau of Indian Standardshas been designated as thecertifying and enforcement authorityfor Lauric Acid under this regulation.
Any individual or business entity thatfails to complywith the provisions of this order shall facepenaltiesas per theBIS Act, 2016. This includes consequences for manufacturing, selling, distributing, or importing Lauric Acid without the necessary BIS certification.
