An important update has been issued regarding the Indian Standard applicable to all existing license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers for Furniture (Storage Units) under the Furniture (Storage Units) (Quality Control) Order, 2025.

Overview of the BIS QCO for Furniture (Storage Units) – IS 17634:2022

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has officially notified the Furniture (Storage Units) (Quality Control) Order, 2025, under the powers granted by Sections 16, 17, and Sub-section (3) of Section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

As per this notification, all storage unit furniture products must conform to the Indian Standard IS 17634:2022 and bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid BIS license.
This license must be obtained following Scheme–I of Schedule–II as specified in the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Applicability and Exemptions

This order applies to all manufacturers and importers selling Furniture (Storage Units) in India. However, the following exemptions have been provided:

  1. Exports:
    Goods or articles manufactured exclusively for export purposes are exempt from this order.

  2. Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs):
    As defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, micro and small enterprises are exempt for eighteen (18) months from the date of publication of this order.

  3. Very Small Enterprises (Udyam-Registered Units):
    Enterprises registered on the Udyam Portal of the Ministry of MSME, with an investment in plant and machinery or equipment not exceeding ₹25 lakh and a turnover not exceeding ₹2 crore, as certified by a Chartered Accountant, are also exempt from this order.

Penalty for Non-Compliance

Any person, manufacturer, or entity found violating this order shall face penalties under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
This includes legal action, fines, or other consequences as prescribed under the Act.
