On April 3, 2018, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, through its Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, issued the Bureau of Indian Standards (Caustic Soda) Order, 2018. 2. Adherence to Standards and Use of the BIS Standard Mark

Under this order, Caustic Soda must comply with Indian Standard IS 252:2013 and must display the BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) to verify conformity:

  • Manufacturers are required to obtain a valid license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to utilize the ISI Mark, certifying that their products meet the mandated quality standards.
  • This regulation applies to Caustic Soda manufactured for the domestic market. However, products manufactured specifically for export are exempt, provided they meet the specifications required by the foreign buyer.

3. BIS as the Certification Authority

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) serves as the designated certification and enforcement authority for this order. It is responsible for verifying that Caustic Soda products in the market comply with the established standards and bear the required BIS Standard Mark.

4. Penalties for Non-Compliance

Failure to comply with the Bureau of Indian Standards (Caustic Soda) Order, 2018 will result in penalties as outlined in the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
